Adding Bleed
If the design you are supplying has an image, block colour or text that runs to the edge of the page, you will need to add a bleed area to the artwork.
Bleed is a continuation of the printed area past the trimmed edge of the page . Without bleed, when cutting down your printed job you run the risk of having a white edge due to small unavoidable movements on the guillotine when the finished job is being cut down to its finished size.
The industry standard on paper printed items is 3mm and must be applied to all sides of the page that have any elements that run to the edge of the page.
When exporting you document please ensure that the 3mm is also saved.
Safe Area
It is also advisable not to have any text close to the trim edge of your document, 3mm is a minimum but 5mm is advisable.
Trim Marks
Trim or Crop marks are small lines that are placed around the edge of the document that show where the job needs to be guillotined by the finisher. These trim or crop marks are added when the document is saved as a PDF.
